Caesar Rodney High School in Camden-Wyoming is the current state champ and has won two out of the last four years. No Delaware team has won nationally.
The winning and runner-up high schools in the Delaware tournament receive $2,000 scholarships from Delaware Technical Community, Wilmington and Goldey-Beacom colleges and the University of Delaware. In addition, Skocik said, Motiva Enterprises traditionally awards each winning student a $1,000 scholarship and each runner-up a $500 scholarship. KENNEY Staff reporter All right, here's the question: What long-running Delaware quiz show moved to a new location last month? The answer is obvious to high school students who compete on the "Texaco Star Academic Challenge." In its 11th season, the show that spotlights student knowledge moved in October from Suburban Cable in New Castle to Comcast Cable in Dover. Longtime host Dave Skocik said "Star" had to find a new home after Suburban moved its production facilities to Pennsylvania. He was notified about six weeks ahead of the taping schedule, he said. "I was kind of stunned," Skocik said. "But I saw an opportunity to move to central Delaware, so we'd be equally accessible to north and south." This year, 36 high schools from Delmar at Delaware's southern border to Archmere Academy in Claymont will send teams to compete on the program.
The competition season runs into January. "It's a way for the schools to highlight what they're doing," Skocik said. "You're always reading about what is wrong with the schools. This shows what is right with them." The move to Comcast's Kent County location on Denneys Road had a slight wrinkle: Comcast did not have a studio large enough to accommodate the show's set. But the lobby was roomy enough, and that's where "Star" tapes each Wednesday.
Taping began in late October and will run through the end of January. The production crew brings in several cameras and perhaps 50 folding chairs for the audience be fore each taping. But the set remains in place at one end of the lobby, so it's there even when someone comes in to pay a bill. No one knew the answer was peppermint. But more often than not, as the quiz progressed, one of the eight students buzzed in with a correct response. Texaco Star Enterprise in Delaware City is now Motiva Enterprises, a joint venture with Texaco, Shell and Saudi Refining companies. But because of the longstanding name recognition, Skocik said the show will retain its title, at least for the time being.
