How to play Pick 4

Pick 4 offers players a day drawing and a night drawing, which means two chances to win each day. You could win up to $5,000 playing the base game! Plus, the FIREBALL add-on gives players the chance to create additional number combinations for another chance to win! Click for a closer view of the playslipto learn more.

Here’s how to play Pick 4:

  • Choose your play amount. You can play Pick 4 for $1 or 50¢.
  • Choose your play type. You've got plenty of options here, so see the Play types section for detailed descriptions.
  • Choose your draw. You can play a day draw, night draw or both!
  • Choose your own numbers on a playslip. Pick a four-digit number from 0000 through 9999.
  • Or use Easy Pick, and let the computer choose your numbers for you.
  • The day drawing takes place daily at 1:59 p.m., and the night drawing takes place daily at 11 p.m.
  • The Pick 4 cutoff time occurs daily at 1:53 p.m. ET for the day drawing and at 10:45 p.m. ET for the night drawing.

Play types

One of the things that makes Pick 4 fun is that there are so many ways to play! Here they are.

  • Exact Order: Play it straight! Match all four digits in the same order as drawn.
  • Any Order: Give yourself options! Match all four of the digits drawn; the order doesn't matter.
  • 50/50: The best of both worlds — split a $1 play in half! Put 50¢ on Exact Order and 50¢ on Any Order.
  • Combo: Cover all the bases! Play Exact Order on every possible combination of a four-digit number.

FIREBALL

Ignite your game with FIREBALL! Here’s how it works:

  • After each day and night Pick 4 drawing, the FIREBALL number will be drawn from 10 numbered balls (0-9).
  • You can use the FIREBALL number to replace any of the Lottery-drawn numbers to make new combinations (create four new combinations of numbers for Pick 4). If your selected numbers match any of the four new FIREBALL winning combinations, you win a FIREBALL prize.
  • Adding FIREBALL doubles the cost of your play(s).
  • Adding FIREBALL improves your chance to win a prize.
  • All FIREBALL wins are separate and in addition to other Pick 4 wins.

Play options

It's impossible to get bored when you play Pick 4. Try these different play options to spice up your next game.

  • Want to play the same numbers for more than one draw on a single ticket? A Multi-Draw ticket lets you play up to 91 consecutive draws on one ticket. Please keep in mind that the ticket price increases for each draw you add.
  • Thinking ahead to a special date? You can buy a ticket for one future draw date. It's called a Future Play. Mark the Optional Plays box on your playslip, and let the clerk know the future draw date you have in mind. Available at retail stores only.
  • Love those numbers so much you want them on more than one ticket? You can Repeat your play and have the same numbers printed on more than one ticket up to 20 times. Available at retail stores only.
  • Tell your clerk what option you want when you present your playslip. Keep in mind that playing more than one draw increases the ticket price by the number of draws you choose.
  • You can buy and play Pick 4 anytime, anywhere in Virginia on your mobile phone, tablet or computer. Purchase multiple draws at once to stay in the game for as long as you like.

Fourteen chances to win every week

  • Pick 4 numbers are drawn twice a day, seven days a week. The day draw is at 1:59 p.m., and the night draw is at 11 p.m.
  • We have a little break between selling and drawing the numbers, so you can't buy tickets starting at 1:53 p.m. ET for that day's draw or starting at 10:45 p.m. for that night's draw.
